Completing his second term as President of Master’s and Mates Union of Greek Merchant Marine (Of Every Rank), Capt. Giorgos Vlahos speaks at maritimes TV, saying that this position was the highest honor for him. He points out that “The Union originates and belongs to fellow captain Of Every Rank. This is clear and it is our belief…” 

He invites all fellow- masters to come and support the Union, stressing that no one can achieve things alone, while the moral and professional obligation of everyone is to belong to an entity widely.

He refers to the timeless support that Greek sailor provides the country and the presuppositions for a successful career.

“Rule number one, in order for a young man to achieve things as sailor: he should love the job, but it is essential that he start from the right basis, which is the quality of training.”

“They try to leave the Academies without sailors, more than half of Academies have no captain director…”

“Have we lost the economic war in the Aegean?” wonders Mr. Antonis Stelliatos, President of Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association (EPEST), while he denounces the indifference and disdain of the state for the professional yachting industry.

Specifically, he refers to the non- compliance with the law for the industry, something which results in a huge loss of revenue for Greek government and especially, it makes Greek professional yachting, whose vessels bring Greek flag and employ Greek sailors, uncompetitive.

Αt maritimes TV, Mr. Nikos Themelis, Naval Architect Mechanical Engineer at Hellenic Register of Shipping and Mr. Giorgos Livanos from the department of Naval Architect Engineers at the Technological Educational Institute of Athens (TEI- A) speak about the excellent cooperation and the considerable expertise gained from the successful completion of LNGCOMSHIP Research Program, as well as the prospects of LNG development in shipping.

Τhe under Greek- Chinese cooperation LNGCOMSHIP Research Program was a collaboration of Greek Register of Shipping with the Technological Educational Institute of Athens (TEI- A), particularly with the department of Naval Architecture which belongs to the Faculty of Technological Applications and the HARBIN ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY of China, concerning the implementation of Liquefied Natural Gas as fuel installation for propulsion of commercial ships.

At maritimes TV, Dr. DING Yu from the HARBIN ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY of China notes that the reduction of environmental pollutants is of concern to the international community and particularly to shipping, where the development of alternative energy sources such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is a solution.

He refers to research activities and expertise developed by the University concerning LNG as marine fuel and the financial support provided by the Chinese state in this direction.

He also speaks about the under Greek- Chinese cooperation LNGCOMSHIP Research Program and the further deepening of this cooperation.

The American P&I Club follows a steady upward track
Mr. Joseph E. M. Hughes, Chairman & CEO, Mr. Vincent J. Solarino, President & COO, Mrs. Dorothea Ioannou, Managing Director, SCB (Hellas) Inc. – Global Business Development Director, and Mr. Ilias Tsakiris, Managing Director, Hellenic Hull Management, speak about the new products and services that the marine insurance company The American P&I Club develops and offers not only to Greek shipping, but also to the international shipping.

These speeches were given at the great event which was organized by the Club in early December at the Piraeus Marine Club.

“H.E.C. is a purely Greek company which introduced the innovative connection of shipping and energy with ecology and environmental protection” emphasized the President of Hellenic Environmental Center (H.E.C.) Mr. Dimitris Melissanidis, at the presentation of new models for the harbor establishments of the company in the area of Drapetsona, on Thursday 22 September 2016.

He noted that it is the most modern waste oil treatment plant in the world, constructed with very strict specifications.

Concluding his speech, he referred “We are in a plant that ranks Greece among the most developed countries in the world concerning the protection of the marine environment”.

Mr. Michalis Psaromichalakis, Director of Research and Development Department of H.E.C. presented the operation of the plant.

Then Mrs Maria Loizidou, professor of the School of Chemical Engineering and Director of the Laboratory of Environmental Science and Technology at the National Technical University of Athens, conveyed the impressions of the scientific community.

Marshall Islands Ship Registry follows a steady upward course and at this time it is the third ship registry in the world in terms of the total capacity of ships, while recently it climbed to first place among the ship registries that Greek- owned fleet selects in terms of the number of ships.

Its ambition is to climb one more step, always according to the criterion of high- quality services that RMI provides to the shipowner, as Theofilos Xenakoudis, Director of RMI at the office in Greece, says in his interview at maritimes TV.

Speaking at maritimes TV, Mr. Michalis Sakellis, President of Greek Shipowners Association for Passenger Ships (SEEN) notes that Greek coastal navigation finds its development rhythm. However, political instability and capital controls had a negative impact on the work of sea short shipping, without helping the attraction of investments in the industry.

He emphasized that the transport work of Greek coastal shipping, for passengers and vehicles, is the largest in Europe.

He pointed out that short sea shipping is an important factor of tourism and it is greatly influenced by the course of tourism.

He referred to the sale of Piraeus port Authority S.A. OLP, stressing that “We are satisfied with the developments, because the interests of coastal shipping were secured by this sale”.

This interview took place on board Blue Star II of the ferry company Blue Star Ferries, on Monday 25 January 2016.

“The main motive for the foundation of GMC Maritime Training Center is our great love for shipping and especially for maritime training” says Mr. Ioannis Yiannopoulos, Founder and Director of GMC Maritime Training Center, speaking at maritimes TV.

In this success and widespread recognition of the training center, the cooperation with Furuno Hellas played a catalytic role.

For his part, Mr. Yiannis Papaefthymiou, Director of Furuno Hellas, notes that he feels vindicated by this cooperation and he points out that GMC is one of the few centers in the world that works with simulators, in combination with the real engines on board.

In its five years of operation, GMC has signed more than 7.000 certificates, and it cooperates with 114 shipping companies.

Greece has the potential to become the first cruise destination in the world, as Mr. Kyriakos Anastasiadis, CEO of Celestyal Cruises points out in his interview at maritimes TV. It is a unique region with many islands close to each other, which Celestyal shows off and has included in the cruise world map.

He notes that the sale of regional airports and the privatization of the port of Piraeus will serve the development of the cruise.

The cooperation of public and private sector is a recipe for success and underlines that the prospect of undertaking the Lavrio port management remains in the development strategy of Celestyal.

Abroad, Celestyal has a dynamic presence in Cuba for several years now, with a steady upward course. From next year one of its cruise ships, the “Crystal”, will develop its activities in the region annually.

A new target market for Celestyal is Russia, which has great potential, but as Mr. Anastasiadis points out, they should become more familiar with this type of tourism.

“A very small percentage of tourists worldwide select the cruise” highlights Mr. Anastasiadis, speaking about the competition and the growth prospects of the industry. “Those tourists visiting Greece this is the number of cruise tourists globally. Imagine the growth prospects…”
