Col Rich short bio:
He joined the Royal Marines in 1996 and spent his early career in a variety of troop commands, first in a nuclear security role with Comacchio Group and then, on completion of Mountain Leader training, with 42 Commando’s Recce Troop and the Brigade Patrol Troop. During his time with 42 Commando Recce he deployed to Sierra Leone on Operations PALLISER and SILKMAN, subsequently receiving a commendation from the Joint Commander.
Promoted to Major in 2004, Rich attended the inaugural Initial Command and Staff Course (Land) and then returned to 42 Commando as Adjutant. After two years commanding Mountain Leader Company at the Commando Training Centre, he returned to 42 Commando once again to command L Company, deploying to Southern Afghanistan for Operation HERRICK 9. For his part in that operation he was awarded the Military Cross and a Canadian Chief of Defence Staff Commendation.
Rich spent a year in the MOD as a Counter Terrorism desk officer before being selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and attending the Advanced Command and Staff Course. From staff college he returned to the MOD for a rewarding and busy two years as Military Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Defence for Military Strategy and Operations. For this role he was awarded an OBE in the 2014 New Year’s Honours list.
Rich returned to 42 Commando for a fourth time in January 2014, as Commanding Officer, spending a varied two years in command that took him all over the world. On completion he briefly commanded Commando Training Wing at Lympstone, before being promoted Colonel and assigned to his current role as Chief of Staff for Commander UK Amphibious Forces and the EU NAVFOR Operational HQ.
