On April 29^th, 2015, the EU adopted the regulation 2015/757 on monitoring, reporting and verification of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from maritime transport and amended Directive 2009/16/EC. Mr. Plevrakis’ presentation focuses on introducing the technical personnel of the shipping industry to the framework and time frame of the regulation. Essentially looking at the time milestones ahead (first coming August 31st, 2017) and explaining the steps of the process. The first step is the creation and verification of a Monitoring Plan and then the submission of the annual Emission Report every year before April 30. The content of the plan and the data that should be reported will be discussed. Towards the end some automated data handling and solutions that could provide a useful tool during the reporting phase will be presented.

Dr. Towns’ primary scope of presentation is to introduce owners to the methodology of carbon credits. What are carbon credits? How do owners qualify for the carbon credit program? Which advanced coatings does this methodology apply to? How ship-owners can be rewarded? How is sustainability in the shipping industry being improved? His presentation will try to address all the aforementioned questions and fully describe the value proposition of carbon credits. Real case examples will be used and presented in detail. Additionally, the relation of the carbon credits to hull coatings will be explained, while an overview of hull coatings and solutions will also be given and during the presentation. Benefits of selected categories of hull coatings will be further discussed and analyzed.
