Cybersecurity for the Shipping Industry

You are kindly invited to a complimentary half-day conference on Cybersecurity for the Shipping Industry. The conference will take place on 25 October 2016, 10:00 - 14:00, at Springfield auditorium and is addressed to the top management of the industry.

Why Cybercrime, why in Shipping, why Today?

  • Lloyd's CEO: Cyber attacks cost companies $400 billion every year, was reported by the multinational business magazine Fortune in Jan 2015.
  • Cyber crime is the greatest threat to every company in the world, said Ginni Rometty, IBM’s President and CEO, according to the American business magazine Forbes in Nov 2015.
  • In USA, on 16/12/2015, the House of Representatives passed bill H.R. 3878 on strengthening cyber security at USA ports.
  • Cybersecurity lessons learned from 'Panama Papers' Breach, is the title of a report in Forbes. According to the magazine, the main lesson is thatthe security mistakes Mossack Fonseca made were appallingly common … most … organizations … are making at least one of the same mistakes.
  • On Feb this year, BIMCO (with Intertanko, Intercargo, ICS & CLIA) released Guidelines on Cyber Security OnboardShips.
  • On June 1,2016, IMO published the long awaited “Interim Guidelines on Maritime Cybersecurity Management”.

One characteristic of cybercrime is the large damage-to-cost ratio (Damage to Society / Expenses of Criminals). The extent to which modern ships are automated, makes them easy targets to hackers. This coupled with heavy consequences from a potential breach, gives rise to serious risks. It is reasonable to expect that in 2016 the shipping industry will focus on cybersecurity.
KCL has been following developments on the subject, since a few years ago and is now ready to assist you in dealing with the problem. Our team brings together expertise from shipping operations, risk management, IT, forensics, legal, insurance & cybersecurity.

To learn about, and discuss, the above, we cordially invite you to this Half-Day Conference. Coordinator will be our Associate Dr. Nikos Frydas, member  of the Greek Cyber-Crime Center. Topics to be discussed include:

  1. What is cybercrime today and how it will evolve in the near future.
  2. Why Shipping, why now?
  3. Legal & Insurance aspects of Shipping.
  4. Technical aspects ashore and on-board.
